Character Information
Name: Alfor
Series: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Appearance: This suave jerk right here (Though he'll be showing up in his Red Paladin armor)
Age: Whatever the Altean equivalent of his late 20s/early 30s? He's king, he's an accomplished alchemist, he's got a kid but she's a wee babe in his time.
Canon Point: After constructing Voltron and defeating the creatures from the rift, when Voltron is out building a reputation as the defender of the universe.
Canon History: Wiki
Personality:
One day, King Alfor of Altea will become the sort of noble and wise king, possessed of a gravitas and weariness from the weight of responsibility and betrayal that has settled upon his shoulders. This isn't that Alfor.
Not yet.
At his current canon point and age, Alfor is still young and full of optimism. He is the quintessential Red Paladin, tending towards instinct and impulse, but he has begun to learn to temper this facet of his nature. It's a work in progress. At his core, Alfor is the type to charge straight in, especially when a problem or puzzle catches his attention. He's gotten himself in trouble in battle with this particular penchant, but bit by bit he learns from his mistakes.
Though he is clearly fascinated by the appearance of the trans-reality comet and the rift torn in the fabric of space and time itself at Daibazaal, he realizes the need to be careful about the approach. He throws himself into studying the comet ore and what may be done with it and brings Honerva, another Altean alchemist and scientist, to Daibazaal to work on the rift. Though Alfor is on board with jumping into the research, he begins to question the safety of looking too closely and experimenting with the rift and the creatures that live therein. He argues that the risks are not worth it for the cost they might exact, despite the discoveries made thus far, and despite the potential for more discoveries and power to come.
However, despite his arguments and misgivings, Alfor does not insist on it stopping. In many ways, it is out of his hands since the rift exists on Daibazaal and thus outside his rule and jurisdiction, and lies in Zarkon's hands. But even so, he continues to work with Zarkon as Paladins. He trusts his friend, even if something about the dangers of the rift give him pause.
This is another facet of Alfor's personality. He believes in and trusts in people, especially those he has come to call his friends and allies. Betrayal and lies are nothing he expects, and in a way this will eventually lead to his downfall. But that optimism and hope in him is also what helped make him an effective paladin. Even before the construction of the Lions, Alfor and the other paladins had allied themselves with each other despite histories of fighting between their people, working for peace and good, and diplomacy in spite of and because of their differences. It's this optimism that leads him. At his current canon point, Alfor and the other paladins are using the Lions and Voltron to defend and fight for peace.
Despite his accomplishments, and his position of authority, Alfor is well aware of his limitations. He has self-awareness enough to defer tactical and battle leadership to Zarkon who is more skilled in that particular area. Though he himself is a leader of his people, he's willing and able to to follow when the situation calls for it. This all comes back to the trust that he places in his friends.
Self aware though he may be, Alfor is not without his faults. He can be impulsive and even reckless at times, and he can be blind to faults in the ones closest to him. Alfor can also overestimate his own abilities and bite off more than he can chew, and not always being ready to admit as much.
The king of Altea cares deeply for his people and his family. Later in his life he will sacrifice himself in order to try to save them, and will send his daughter away to keep her safe. Though this moment is a ways in his future, even as he is now, he would give anything in his power to keep his family and friends safe. This piece of him has not changed.
Alfor is a man still growing as a person and into the person that he will one day be. He's left behind some of the greater brashness and impulsiveness of his youth, but he's not yet the measured and calm man he will one day be. He's still full of the optimism and hopefulness of his youth. Many of his better traits as well as his faults are what will lead to eventual downfall, when he is eventually lied to and betrayed by Zarkon, when he sees everything that he's built come crashing down. But for now this still remains in his future.
Abilities:
Alfor is a skilled Altean alchemist. He can wield a sort of magic that mostly involves manipulating quintessence/energy/life force. The extent of what Altean alchemy can do is never fully touched upon -- but it appears able to heal and also to transfer life energy from one place to another. For example, it allows him to infuse quintessence into the Voltron Lions when he created them. He able to use this alchemy to knock people unconscious with little more than a touch.
Alfor can use his own life energy/quintessence to operate the teludav and create wormholes, given that he was pilot of the Castle before Allura, as well as presumably channeling his life force to replenish a Balmera since the teludav and the crystals collected from the Balmera are connected.
Given that the limits of Altean alchemy are never exactly defined, I'm good with its scope being nerfed and limited -- perhaps to manipulation of his own life energy and that of others for limited healing, and keeping the Vulcan-nerve-pinch style alchemy king fu.
Alfor is an accomplished swordsman, shown in his ability to take on multiple foes at once -- though he is not quite as strong in combat as some of his fellow paladins, in particular Zarkon.
The king of Altea has also proven to be very intelligent -- in his design and engineering of the Voltron Lions as well as his assistance in study and research into the rift.
